Choosing what type of implants to use is one of the main decisions when considering breast implants. Over 99% of women in my Seattle, Washington private practice choose silicone implants. Silicone tends to look and feel more natural than saline implants. silicone implants are also less likely to show visible rippling, which is caused by wrinkles and folds of the implant shell. Rippling is a bigger issue for thin women who have little breast tissue.
Silicone implants come with two basic types of gel. There are highly cohesive "gummy bear" implants or cohesive silicone implants. Most women in Seattle choose cohesive gel implants over the firmer gummy bears. The reason goes back to their more natural look and feel.
What are gummy bear breast implants?
Gummy bear implants are anatomically shaped implants that are filled with a firmer type of silicone. Do these newer breast implants give the best look and feel? Let's discuss this in a little more detail.
So do shaped "gummy bear" breast implants look better than round implants?
It seems intuitive that these more naturally shaped breast implants would give the most natural look. However, when placed inside the body they don't like any different than round implants. Several research studies have shown that there is no difference between "gummy bear" and round implants. Researchers performed breast enhancement surgery using shaped and round breast implants. They then showed photos to a group of people. They found that no one can accurately tell the difference between shaped and round implants. Also, no one had any preference for which implant looked more attractive. So we now know that no one can tell the difference between round and shaped implants, so is there still a benefit to using gummy bears?
The photos demonstrate women who have a natural look with round silicone breast implants.
Even gummy bear breast implants can rupture.
If you picture a gummy bear candy, it's a solid structure. It has a uniform consistency throughout. Gummy bear implants are not built in the same way. They have a silicone outer shell with a cohesive gel filler within. The outer shell can still rupture. If they were to rupture the inner gel will not leak out. This is a new and important safety feature of 5th generation gummy bear breast implants.
Shaped implants do have drawbacks.
Make sure you think about the "feel" of your breasts also.
Shaped gummy bears feel more firm. Their textured outer shell adheres firmly to breast tissue. These attributes give a less natural look when laying down. Round silicone implants changed their shape in any position, so they tend to appear more natural.
Which type of breast implant should I choose
When you consider all of these important factors most women will get the most natural and beautiful results with a round silicone breast implants. There are some very special circumstances where a gummy bear implant should be used. This is more rare.
When considering breast enlargement surgery make sure you choose a plastic surgeon who will take the time to answer all of your questions, explain all of your options, and help you can decide if breast implants are right for you.
